Asad said to them: 'O Jews, you can see what has happened to you I offer you three alternatives. Then He made it lawful to him and to them as a mercy from Him and a gift from the Compassionate, the Merciful. had it not previously gone forth from Me that I would punish only after a prohibition-and He had not prohibited then-I would have punished you for what you did. prisoners and booty, 'an awful punishment,' i.e. 'Had there not previously been a book from God there would have come upon you for what you took,' i.e. 'But God desires the next world,' i.e.: their killing them to manifest the religion which He wishes to manifest and by which the next world may be attended. So all the persons of your tribe should give me the pledge of allegiance by shaking hands with me.' The hands of two or three men got stuck over the hand of their prophet and he said, "You have committed the theft.' Then they brought a head of gold like the head of a cow and put it there, and the fire came and consumed the booty. Then that prophet said (to the man), 'The theft has been committed by your people.
So one man from every tribe should give me a pledge of allegiance by shaking hands with me.' (They did so and) the hand of a man got stuck over the hand of their prophet.
